I've just done my first Cooper's Stout kit. I used 1.5kg of dark spraymalt. It started out with an OG of over 1040 - just over on my hydrometer, but it was over 30C when I did the reading. It fermented all over the basement for about 36 hours, then stopped. It's been at about 1014 for the last three days. I assume that's it, or near enough, and that I can prime it and stick it in a keg now. Is that right? I'd read that the fermentation was spectacular and it was (my wife dreamt about Quatermass), but all over in less than two days is incredible.

1014 sounds about right for a spraymalt beer. 3 Days steady, so aye go ahead and stuff it in that keg and be prepared to wait. (Or not as the case with Coopers stout, i polished off the last keg about a week before it would've reached optimum quality

Thanks for the advice, Benson. I'm really looking forwards to tasting this famous brew. It certainly smells good as you're making it, putting all those rich ingredients in. A lick of the liquid malt extract was quite a surprise, though. How can something that looks so much like black treacle have such a bitter, lingering aftertaste?

I had a couple of three pints of my 1st Coopers stout last night. Its only a few days old an tastes fantastic. this is not gonna get much conditioning, its gonna get drunk.

Thats good Normski, but the trick is to get a couple more Kegs (I have 5) so you always have a couple of kegs at a decent drinking stage, with 3 on their way, I have 2 FV's too to 'keep em coming!'Normski wrote:I had a couple of three pints of my 1st Coopers stout last night. Im drinking it, not because I dont have anything ready in my only 3 kegs, but becase it is ready and tastes great. Coopers website even say it can be drunk young. It can I am.

Mine is saved for a birthday brew. It's the one time a year I can't drink any green.
Still started fermenting on St George's Day. Will be bottled on Sunday probably, so still a little greener than I'm used to for the main batch come 26th May.
