I was going to make a homemade boiler but am concerned about the exposed element.
Do people use these for heating water in or for boiling the wort or both?
If you are boiling wort, do hop leaves ever stick to the element and burn or if using a hop bag, is it possible for the nylon bag to melt on the exposed element??
I suppose the theory is that it is always moving so shouldnt touch the element for long enough to burn but has anyone experienced this?
Homemade Boiler - Does the Element Burn Things?
Re: Homemade Boiler - Does the Element Burn Things?
I often boil my wort with both 3Kw elements running for 90 minutes and have never had a problem with anything burning or hops getting stuck to the elements. They clean up easily with a bit of scotchbrite (or the scourer side of a kitchen sponge).
Re: Homemade Boiler - Does the Element Burn Things?
The hops wont stick and burn on the element as long as you have a vigorous boil,
as the hops just keep moving with the rolling water, i once topped up with 5 ltrs of water
that wasn`t up to temp and it stopped the boil and some hops did fall onto the element and got
burnt, but the beer still turned out ok.

I have had trouble with higher-gravity worts burning onto the elements but the only way round that would be to go gas-fired. I use hop bags, and they tend to float.
