Wheelers Black Malt in BYOBRAAH

Post by arturobandini » Tue May 19, 2009 6:10 pm

Graham has stated in his book that he has added some Black Malts to the grists of some recipes to adjust for colour as the Brewery has used Brewer's Caramel.

If I was to use Brewer's Caramel instead does anyone know the ratio? eg 10ml Caramel to 20g Black Malt...or whatever

Can't help with ratio's but I add 20ml brewers caramel to 23 litres of wort made with 5kg MO and this is the colour of Adnams Broadside.

Thanks for the response Jubby. Funny you should mention Broadside as I picked up a few bottles of this today!

Referencing that with the recipe in the book it could be said to be about 20ml - 90g. I might give the Caramel a look in for my next brew out of curiousity.

You may know this already, but just in case you are thinking of brewing Broadside; The bottled version uses First Gold hops and is brewed to a higher ABV than the cask version which is brewed with Boadicea, Goldings and Fuggles. (different to GW's recipe)

Thanks for the tips! I've never had this in the bottle so I'll be giving it the once over a little later on. I was referencing the book recipe for the EBC more than anything though. So much to brew, so little time to brew it.
