Newbie questions

Post by thunderbird13 » Wed May 27, 2009 9:50 am

Hi everyone
I'm a newbie here and I'd be grateful if you could answer 2 questions for me

If I fit an air lock onto my FV will it reduce the smell by slow realeasing any gasses. I have to brew in a spare bedroom and the house can smells a bit during primary fermenting !

When it comes to bottling I've read that its better to transfer the brew to a secondary container and then leave it there to condition for a week of so before bottling and yet I've seen example of people bottling straight from the FV and them leaving the beer to secondary ferment in the bottle - which method is better ?

Thanks

As for your second question, I just transfer to a Bottling bucket (FV with a Tap and bottling stick attached) so that I can prime the batch all at once and then bottle and let secondary fermentation happen :)

It won't affect the speed of gas release. Bubbling the gas through water might slightly reduce any smell but I wouldn't bet on it.
Best wishes

You dont like the smell of beer?? It's lovely to come home and get that aroma that tells you your kit is brewing well!

Re second question - I just leave to settle in main FV, and with the help of my wife and a steady hand, bottle straight from that using a bottling stick.

None of my bottles have a ridiculous amount of sediment in them (only a circle around the deeper edge of the glass bottles)
