Elderflowers in Beer kit?

Post by johcharly » Mon Jun 08, 2009 1:15 pm

Hi, just bought a cheap Geordie scotch export kit and I wondered if I co8ld improve it a little with some fresh elderflowers? And if so how would I go about?

I've been thinking of doing the same, and I'd suggest steeping them for 30-40 mins in hot water (a litre or two) and adding that as part of your total water addition.

Thanks for the reply, was thinking along those lines, either that or submerging them in a muslin bag in the FV for some or all of the fermentation. Will give it a go later, only cost me £6, and nothing ventured and all that.

I'd be interested to see if you can improve this particular kit with elderflowers. It's a nice, subtle session ale if made with light hopped or unhopped spraymalt. You often see it on offer in Wilkos. Suggest you make it as per the manufacturer's instructions and then tweak it for future brews. You may not feel the need to add elderflowers once you've tasted the beer as it is intended.

Let us know the results if you do add elderflowers. Good luck.
