What can I add to my Young's Bitter kit?

Post by silkyuk9 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 3:45 pm

Basically I have bought a cheap tin of Young's bitter, the reason is I want to add something else to enhance the bitter. I was thinking of buying a 500g bag of Chocolate Malt and boiling it up and adding the liquid to the 40 pints that I need.

Any thoughts on this please.

Also is there any suggetions of what i can buy from a brew shop that i could add to make it a little better.

thanks

try some crystal. about 200g. rinse out the can and steep around 65 degrees for 20 minutes. i also add two other cans full of water as well. you will need a stock pot or very large pan. give it a stir and you should be left with some brown malty water. remove the malt, or easier use a muslim bag, then top up to the usual 40 pints. did an enhanced geordie this morning.

If you're going to steep crystal malt etc. then it's best to give the liquid a good boiling after removing the grains to kill any possible infection.

wouldn't use the choccy malt - a bit heavy for a bitter.

perhaps something like:

1.6kg extract
500g medium spraymalt
500g beerkit enhancer
150-200g raw cane sugar
make up to 20L, including 'hop tea' made from

5g goldings boiled for 30mins
15g fuggles boiled for 10 mins
20g goldings boiled for 1min
all boiled in about 2L water, strained and rinsed through with hot water into FV.

how do I know? Must have done about 10 batches.....
