Beer Yeast in a Cider Kit

Post by Cider Rich » Tue Jul 14, 2009 12:58 pm

Hello all

Just started my second brew, a Samson Cider Kit. I was a little bit surprised to see that the kit came with a sachet of beer yeast, not cider yeast like the first kit I done and now drunk (a Brew Buddy cider kit).

So, my question is this: whats the difference between the two types of yeast? So far I've noticed that the beer yeast is giving more of a 'head' to the brew in the FV and much less bubbles are rising compared to when I did the first brew using cider yeast.

For cider you obviously dont want a head in the finished product, but for it to be nicely sparkling. Is it therefore ok to be using a beer yeast for cider? I'm assuming it must be if that is what came with the kit?
