I'm not at my desktop right now, so no recipes to hand, but look on the recipes forum here, or at http://www.hopandgrain.com

a good std bitter can use crystal, pale malt (marris otter), and then either a single or two hops.

so something like:

4000g pale
225g crystal
45g goldings @ 90mins
20g fuggles @ 10 mins

not seen what that looks like in beer engine, but something along those lines would give you a good standard bitter, with an easy shopping list :) for a first brew.

That's great thank you I will give that a go - I like easy shopping lists !
Going to do a woolly jumper Kit first that arrived promptly - thanks to Paul at http://www.barleybottom.com and go from there.
Will have a look at the recipes on suggested site.

Thanks again.

that was off the top off my head so i've no idea what its like. i meant it as an example of something simple. use the recipes in the link or here on jims that are tried and tested too. cant vouch for my own concoction, but it should be tasty nonetheless :)
