Snow?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Snow?

Post by dedken » Wed Jan 06, 2010 7:23 pm

Hi all,

What with the current weather in this country, has anyone thought about using/previously used snow for brewing liquor? If one were to consider this option what would be the best way of gedding rid of any nasties? Presumably boiling?

Just a thought really!

Funilly enough, I was thinking the same thing today. Could fill my boiler up with snow in no time!

I would expect it would be quite devoid of minerals.

mountain's correct, there would be nothing in the way of minerals in it, a bit like frozen distilled water.

It would be the same as using rainwater I'd imagine i.e. full of cr*p unless you live somewhere really remote.

haha... reminds me of one of my favourite Frank Zappa tunes [from 1974].

For anyone who's interested, here's a nice little animation to go with it...

Don't eat the yellow snow

I used snow many moons ago to produce a very nice carlsberg special clone. In fact it was so nice we drank it out of the demijohn leaving it 24 hours each time for the crud to settle. However although snow looks clean (and it came from a clean drift) I had to boil and decant it twice to get rid of the rubbish. It also takes a bit of melting to achieve sufficient liquid.A better bet is to use Aqua Pura .It's on offer at Makro at the moment at £3.59 for16 litres BOGOF

surely a waste of energy heating it up from frozen, and how can you be sure of purity when scooping it up off the garden or wherever?

you're all MAD I tell you!
