Can anyone recommend a recipe for an ale using lager malt? I normally make my lager during the winter so it has a chance to lager outside in the garage in the cold weather. This year due to shoulder surgery and bad weather I didn't get around to it so have 25kg Lager Malt sitting waiting to be used. As my ale stocks are a bit depleted at the moment I was looking to brew an ale with the lager malt, say a nice light summer ale. Any ideas? I've got a Brewlab Stanadrd Ale yeast sitting in the fridge which I'd like to use up too.

Re: Using Lager Malt in Ale
hi,
i don't have a recipe as such, but wychwoods do an ale called wychcraft clicky
you could have a stab at recreating that!
i think a few blonde ales use lager malts.

Made this last year. I made this with saflager 23 but theres no reason you can't use your ale yeast.
For 5 gallons, 7lbs lager malt. 1 lb wheat malt. - mash. boil with 30g first Gold 8%. 20g cascade 5%ish. (alpha). late hops to kettle 20g cascade and 20g bobek - for last 10 mins of boil and transfer. brew with lager yeast at 12-14 degrees. post ferment add 50g elderflowers, 20g amarillo,20g casade and 10g grated lemon rind (make sure it is not waxed)to a sterilised vessel - 1 gall fermenting bucket? - and pour preboiled water over these ingredients at about 80 degrees C. Leave this mix for 2 hrs - dont let it get cooler than 65c. then add to the brew. nb. because you are adding back liquid brew the beer a bit stronger - try for an OG of 1053 and make the infusion about 3 litres

Re: Using Lager Malt in Ale
If you brewed a strong dark beer or something pretty hoppy I don't think the bade grain would make any difference. If it were me I'd just brew my normal recipes with the lager malt as the base grain.
I'm just here for the beer.
Re: Using Lager Malt in Ale
Go for your usual ale brew with the lager malt, not much difference & you may even find it slightly better efficiency
enjoy !!!

Agreed - just replace the regular pale malt with lager malt - although don't do any recipes that have dark malts in them (unless you're trying for a schwarzbier or similar) as there's not much point.
Personally, I like making light coloured, hoppy summer ales using 50/50 pale malt and lager malt, plus a bit of medium crystal malt and a handful of wheat malt. Just finished a pint of one right now....and it was awesome.

You could try making a kölsch bier. I'm going to be making one this next week as I also have 3/4 sack of lager malt to use up. I'm poking up a tube of wlp029 german ale/kölsch from hop and grape tomorrow. I'm shure something like Nottingham or s-05 or s-33 would be ok alternatives.

Thanks all for you advice. I'll think I'll have a go at a Wychcraft
