Second AG Brew, Old Sparky IPA

Post by chivelegs » Sat Mar 27, 2010 6:00 pm

Had my 2nd AG brewday last week and tried out my newly modified cheapo coolbox mashtun.

Recipe was a cross of one from the Charlie Papazian Joy of Homebrewing book with a TTL from Graham Wheelers book

4.5kg Pale
1kg munich
.5kg Torrified Wheat

60g EK Goldings - 60 min
40g Styrian Goldings - 20 min
15g Styrian Goldings after boil
Yeast from S-05 slurry

The mashtun worked fine, no leaks and only dropped about 1 degree over 90 mins. However, at the beginning of the boil with the HLT still going, I was rather stupidly running 2 boilers from the same plug via a trailing lead which was rather tangled on itself. The rather obvious result was the lead melting, a large bang and quite a nice little electrical spark. Panic, obviously ensued as I ran a spare winding extension lead out into the conservatory from the kitchen. Got through to the end without running 240v through my legs and luckily it was only a 13amp blown fuse and a rather sorry looking lead that got chucked rather than 21 litres of beer and a boiler.

That made me laugh, the label not your misfortune.

I had an electrician change our garage wiring because my wife was always running the washing machine and dryer with an uncoiled lead from the same socket.

Glad it finished up ok

The last beer I brewed on the patio using a cable extension managed to melt the plastic around the plug itself.......
I now have the metal bit of the plug sticking out of the socket....must get it replaced before someone tries to mess with it.....

6" nails are good. Get them sparking and it's Lightning IPA

Good work that man. Sounds like a nice brew.

I've also done the old "melt the extension lead" trick. Although I managed to use a coiled lead.....so it all melted in on itself quite spectacularly!
