Theakston's Black Bull

Post by coatesg » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:38 pm

Having just come back from a very enjoyable two and a half days on a surprise trip to Masham for my 30th thanks to SWMBO :D :D , my beer has been shamed by the quality of the brews up there! Black Sheep and Theakstons together - yum!

Theakstons Black Bull was probably my favourite and I drank a load of it (along with the odd pint of OP  ) at the White Bear where we stayed - anyone any ideas on a recipe here?

Cheers!

Sad to say, when we were there, I was less than Impressed by everything on the bar at the Theakstons visitors centre, good friendly staff. OP is the only passable drink in my mind, Too much creaminess in the others. Did you note the large stocks of Micronized Barley in the brewery and also get told about them using sugars to correct the FG rather than brewing to over shoot the OG and liquor-back to FG.

Blacksheep was much better ;)

Anyway... Hope someone comes up with the recipe :)

I thought the tour at black sheep was much better yes - and the Theakston tour guide did tell us about adding sugars back in to make back the OG (though she also referred to them sparging down to the required gravity also, so I imagine that much of it is done for commercial considerations).

The brewing network did a clone of Riggwelter a couple of weeks ago. They got the info straight from the head brewer at Black Sheep.

I realize this is vague, but gives a few clues at least:

Theakston Black Bull Bitter
OG: 1037
ABV: 3.9
IBU: 29
Colour: 12°SRM/23°EBC, copper
Grainbill: Pale Malt, Crystal Malt
Hops: Fuggles (90 min), Goldings (15 min and dry-hops added to fermentor)
