My Hop Strainer on a LIDL boiler

Post by koomber » Tue Jul 06, 2010 7:53 pm

Using the Jam maker from LIDL's I've done the following:

Image

Length of 8mm pipe that loops back to a 15mm T-piece compression fitting that has reducers fitted to accept the 8mm. Using an angle grinder we put in cuts along the length of the 8mm pipe. The standard tap was replaced with a 15mm bulkhead onto a tap. We drilled the bulkhead fitting out so that a bit of 15mm pipe can be pushed all the way through and I can get fittings on the inside and outside.

I filled it up and drained it and there seems a good flow through. Slightly slower than without the loop but nothing major.
I went for this setup as whirlpooling will make the crud gather in the middle.
The compression fittings allow me to remove the ring when using it to provide boil water or pasturising.
Any thoughts?

That looks really good would it be better to fit the strainer with the slot face downwards I know that works best on my Mashtun??

Looks good. Was about to say also to turn it over to get another pint or two of wort out of the bottom and avoid a stuck mash.

My ideas on both mash tun false bottom and hop filter: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34063

And in use: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=34064

The hop filters leave about 250ml, shame the hops use another litre!
They are plenty big enough if you don't run a pump through them.
I find a smaller filter works better for hops as it is the hops themselves which filter out the trub and break.

+1 to Rimski and Brotherton Lad

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but I've not done any AG yet, what is a 'stuck mash'? Thanks

It's when the grain in the mash tun clogs up your filter and tap, stopping the flow of wort. If your filter is fitted slit side up, the grain is likely to clog it up quickly, leaving you with 3 gallons of hot porridge.

Small world, btw, I'm running in the Stirton fell race tonight.

Sorry BL but I'm of the firm opinion that all fell runners should be killed.
It may seem harsh but I'm a big fat bloke and there's nothing worse than me making it to the top of a mountain, huffing, puffing and dripping with sweat, and then having some smug git jog past me without even the lightest glow of perspiration.

It's uncharitable but I find myself thinking "go on, twist yer ankle"...

Anyway, have a good race and watch out for pot holes....

I'm working on it, boingy. Obliterated disc in spine, 2 trashed metatarsal capsules and a shoulder that dislocates if I trip over. And all for the joy of the sport, the scenery and the gallon of beer that follows a hard race. Wasdale race this Saturday, 21 miles and 9000' of ascent. Thirsty work indeed. =P~

Sharp Haw tonight is just a warm-up.

Or the lads from Hereford come sprinting past with 120lb bergens, guns held at the ready, on the slopes of the Brecons - SMOKING!!

Wasdale Head used to do a decent pint for the way down though!
