What Beer?

Post by bossman187uk » Tue Mar 06, 2007 12:20 am

Hi just wanted you guys advice on what beer i should go for yet.

The main beers i drink seem to be largers (heiniken, Stella, budweiser, labatte blue :)

Although recently iv been lovign guiness but feel im not skilled enough for that yet lol

So far i have made a coopers larger kit brew which went really well.
At the moment im fermenting a coopers Bitter with beer enhancer instead of sugar so excited about that too.

I have ordered a corni and was looking for my first brew i could use with it and wondered what u all thought?

I saw a coopers Mexican beer which i assume is like corona.

anyway what do u guys think?

cheers

You'll get better results if you use all spraymalt. You buy it in bags of 500g, boil it up with the water you boil for the kit (not in your electric kettle ;), and proceed as normal.

Use bottles.

I find that the kit stouts work surprisingly well...

You can get an excellent flavour, and I've never had any problem with a tight head - it's just not as tight and creamy as Guinness - I bottle mine, so think bottled Guinness Original and you'll not be far away...

The pub draught stuff is gassed with a Nitrogen/CO2 mix.

As for lagers, I'd stick to bottles too - and you need lots of patience as the lagers take a while to condition. Have a search of the board for posts about adding fresh/dried hops to Lager kits for aroma, there's some excellent advice in Lager kit threads by DaaB on this very subject. The process of concentrating the wort, and also the can processing, drives off some off the subtle hop flavours.

Thanks for tha advice but as i said i just got a corni set up so not planning on bottling my next set up lol

Ill prob look into muntons or bru pack larger kits and add spray malt , and buy a 3rd party yeast (prob ale yeast as hard for me to get temp low for a larger yeast)

Anyone know of any kits that have been very close t oa comercial equiverlent?

If you have bought your corny off of Norman and it has a chrome tap, then it has a wonderful creamer device :D
I am not sure what instructions Norm sends but pull the tap forward to pull all but the last 1/2 inch of your pint and then push the handle back to get a creamy head
IMO it is very difficult to replicate commercial type lagers with a kit :( To get anywhere near you will need to use a true lager yeast, ferment cool and then lager cold.
But, the 3kg stout kits are excellent and with the combination of a good kit and a corny set up with a creamer tap, you will be able to serve a superb pint of your own stout, but I think you would be dissapointed with a compromised lager kit.

i'm drinking a John Bull masterclass irish stout which was only my second ever brew.
Mine was all bottled so i could put it in the fridge but it should be good whatever method.
its an all malt (3kg) kit so not the cheapest but worth every penny i reckon.
Better than Guinness!
