extract marstons pedigree smells and tastes of tcp

Post by timbobist » Sat Oct 23, 2010 7:25 pm

my first extract brew hasn't turned out good so far. it smells and tastes a bit of tcp. i am quite sure i rinsed everything before transfering it from the boiler to the fermenting bin. i didn't have a wort cooler so transfered it hot and let it cool overnight then pitched the yeast. it fermented with the trub in the fermenter could this be the cause ?

A TCP smell is not a good omen but give the beer a chance. What stage are you at? Is it still in the fermenter?

TCP smell/taste is the classic symptom of chlorine being present at some point in the brewing process. Either in your brewing liquor - do you treat it to remove chlorine ? Or by not rinsing gear which has been subjected to chlorine based sanitisers.
