Starch End Point Test

Post by Belto » Wed Mar 21, 2007 6:14 pm

I have been reading Wheelers information on this subject
How important is this test?
I have tried several local Chemists and they do not or cannot assist with the
Iodine Blue Indicator or Iodine + Potassium Iodide he recommends.
He also recommends Using Domestic Iodine
Is this the Aqueus Betadine I already have ?
or is this used in a diluted form

Betadine will do it. But with modern malts a 90 minute mash is easily sufficient to convert the starches into sugars.

It really isn't, unless your thermometer is 10 degrees out either direction, all of the starch will convert.

Its a good indication to a new brewer but taste will tell you you have conversion .I pesonally pour a little bit of wort on the seat in the shed and sit in it for ten minutes if I can get the chair off my butt it needs a little longer if I can't I just cut myself out and sparge.
Its called breweing by the seat of your pants
Bit heavy on trousers though
