AG #1... Goldminer

Post by Zephiacus » Sun Jun 19, 2011 11:27 am

Right well thats the mash on for my first all grain, I have been brewing partial mash for a while now and have just taken the step up to ag! Unfortunatly pictures will start on brew number too as i didnt fancy messing about with my inoperable camera while doing the 1st one!

Anyway recipe is to try and be like the Co-op bottle conditioned goldminer beer which is a really nice drink. I couldnt find anyone that had tried a clone so i just made mine up. The brewer said in an article somewhere that it was just optic with a pinch of crystal single hopped with first gold... Decided to add a bit of munich to it too...

Grains, to be mashed at 67 degrees for 1hr 30mins(actually start temp was 67.6, which should be ok...) -
Marris Otter Pale Malt - 4000g
Munich Malt - 600g
Crystal Malt - 300g

Hop additions -
First Gold 7.8 AA 25g - 60mins
First Gold 7.8 AA 25g with irish moss - 15mins
First Gold 7.8 AA 25g - Flame out

got about an hour of mash to go and will update on boil, slightly nervous about how my homemade boiler will cope...:)

pitched and waiting for it to start, i didnt fancy trying to harvest yeast for this brew, though if this one is nice, i'll harvest next time, so i used wlp-001 californian ale whic i've heard a lot about and felt that i needed to try out...., now for the hard part.., waiting!

Just harvest the yeast from the trub once you rack the beer into secondary or into a bottling bucket.

GIve it a quick wash to remove as much trub as possible. Check out wolfys guide on exactly how do to it. If you dont have plans to use it straight away then simply store in the fridge for a couple of weeks...

I meant harvest from the bottle, as the beer i'm trying to make this one like is bottle conditioned! I've looked at a guides but decided not to bother with this one, but i'll use their yeast if it works for next time!
