Lager malt

Post by delboy » Thu Apr 19, 2007 5:54 pm

Took swmbo out for lunch today at a look brew pub, i'd emailed them before hand and asked them if they'd be prepared to sell me 25kg of pale malt.
They got back to me and said no problems £17 unmilled £20 milled (its cost £27 plus 12 p&p from H&G for the same amount)i asked them in the email what variety it was MO, optic etc but didn't get a reply.
Anyway when i was in having lunch i managed to get speaking to one of the brewers he told me they use lager malt.

Im back home now with 25kg of lager malt, thomas fawcetts (their website states that they use halycon for lager malt).

Couple of questions, has anyone used this particular malt and what did you think of it?

What is the major differnce between say pale malt like MO etc and lager malts other than the colour?

I'll still be able to brew good ales with this i presume?

Lots of brewers use lager malt for their pale golden summer beers. Crouch Vale use it for example in Brewers Gold and that's won best beer at the GBBF.
