Winter Beer
Winter Beer
Put this together last night and brewed it today. Lovely smell at the end of the boil, like mulled red wine. I added lactose as all my darker beers have been plagued by dryness / wateriness, even with Windsor and a hotter mash. I made a last minute decision to boil for 75 minutes instead of 60, so boiled the malt for 15 minutes before adding the bittering hops. I added the treacle and brown sugar 5 minutes from the end, together with the spices and lactose. I'm hoping for a malty, slightly spiced beer.

Re: Winter Beer
Fingers crossed! I was worried about the fermentation temp as the heater in my beer fridge is broken, but at a room temperature of 16c it's gone like a rocket. That looks like it will a delicious dark, fruity and spicy beer
Re: Winter Beer
Just quick quesion, black treacle. Is this a malt or is this the syrup stuff? If it is a malt can I replace it with anything as the brew shop doesn't have this in stock.
Re: Winter Beer
Yes, it's Tate and Lyle black treacle (i.e. syrup).Just quick quesion, black treacle. Is this a malt or is this the syrup stuff? If it is a malt can I replace it with anything as the brew shop doesn't have this in stock.
Re: Winter Beer
Nice one thanks. Seems I will have have to brew something else as I have almost drank my first xmas beer this month lol. This is a fun sport.
Thanks for the clarification. Looking forward to teaching these Norwegians more about good ales

Re: Winter Beer
It certainly is! I bottled a week ago and had a little taste. Blooming gorgeous. Lovely and rich with subtle spices but a dry finish and well rounded bitterness. Shall be sinking a few over Chrimbo.Seems I will have have to brew something else as I have almost drank my first xmas beer this month lol. This is a fun sport.

Have converted a good few pils drinkers. They no longer taste the difference between pils.
There is a long way to go though huh:-)
