Beer engine 1.09 ABV confusion

Post by poo hed » Tue Jan 17, 2012 8:15 am

hello,

sorry if this is the wrong section of the forum, i didn't quite know where to post it :?

iv'e been tinkering about with the beer engine and it seems great, but the abv always comes out different to the "OG - FG / 7.46" method, even though it tells you the estimated OG and the FG, i assume it must use a different method to get the approx abv ?

i had no reason to doubt the / 7.46 method, but now i am confused as to which would be more accurate and also why it differs on beer engine ?

thankyou

The calculation changes based on the gravity of the beer.. it's known as the "fudge factor".

OG - FG * 0.129 = ABV (for beers upto 4.6)
OG - FG * 0.130 = ABV (for beers over 4.6)

there are more multiplication factors for stronger beers, I've never see the 7.46 thing before.
I find that BeerEngine works out things spot on 99% of the time.

^^Yeah, what he said!^^ **Edit**

thanks and thanks!

the "7.46" thingy is in coopers kit instructions :| (you have to add on .5 regardless of the amount of priming sugar too :=P), i blame them entirely.

didn't realise about higher gravity requiring different "maths" .... i was cranking fermentables up and up on BE and scratching my head.

so some kit people like myself are over estimating the ABV of their kits then, basically!

unfortunately that would make me a bigger lightweight then i thought

you learn something everyday!

thanks again
