Do bottles keep ok in heat?

Post by SeasideBrewer » Sat May 26, 2012 10:05 pm

I have to keep my bottled brews outside. No space inside. Most of them were brewed March/April time. I do keep them under cover in a side alley that never catches direct sun, and they are kept against a north facing wall. Even so they do get warm and the weather has been hot recently.

I'm hoping they will remain drinkable throughout the summer and to an extent I'll have to live with whatever happens to them because I have nowhere else to store them. But what should I expect? Loss of hop flavour? Will they become undrinkable? They are all lightly carbonated so not expecting bottle bombs. Hopefully!

Defo will become undrinkable. I will give you my address to send them to and I will dispose of appropriately...

Seriously, I am confident that they will be fine. You have them out of direct sunlight so all will be good.

Should be fine, the big issue is keeping them out of the sun! Your best bet is to store them some place cold for as long as possible prior to drinking them (if you can get 5 in the fridge and can leave em for a week prior to drinking for example) this helps retain the carbonation. Like fizzy pop, when they get warm the carbon dioxide will start to move out of the brew and into the head/bottle neck, which is why you get the foam overs and a lifeless drink. Getting them cold does a lot to fix this!
as LC says, if you are struggling its important to inform the correct authorities who will help you dispose of it in the appropriate manner ^_-

I keep my bottles in boxes in the garage, so the Sun is not an issue, but the temp in there has gotten up to 30.c this week. I am a little concerned about off flavours, especially with the Lager. Should I be worried?

in my experience? no. heats a fekker.it shortens the life of bottled beer, causes them to over carbonate, and i.m.e. causes much wailing and nashinig of teeth. i keep my bottled beer near cellar temps for as long as poss, cant regulate the shops they go in but always recomend keeping as small a stock in as possible! live ale in a bottle is a touchy thing, would you keep a cask of beer in those conditions? if you know owt about beer id say no

beer should be kept at a cool constant temp.......
