Vienna, Pilsner and Munich Storage

Post by danbrew » Fri Jul 06, 2012 12:28 pm

Was going to get some of these in over the next few weeks with a view to using them over the coming months (bulk, for me, order to save on postage) but the bloke in LHBS says Pilsner malt can go 'slack' which I interpret as being it deteriorates quickly and needs to be used fresh.

My pale malt lasts a good few months in an air tight box in a cool dark place... Do Vienna, Pilsner and Munich store similarly well or should I expect problems?

Mine never got any off tastes, despite being over 3 years old. But I'm storing it whole, not crushed.

Thanks Zgoda

Anyone got any ideas about crushed?

I don't crush any malt until just before brew day. I'd think that whole would last better than crushed.
I'm just here for the beer.

I do find the efficiency drops off more than pale malt. I used vienna in the past that was almost 12 months old (crushed) and only got 65% efficiency.

I think you are good for at least 6 months, probably a year, if kept sealed and dry.
I keep my crushed malts in Blue HDPE drums, never had any problems, as others have said the last bit might be worse for efficiency.
