Impulse bitter.

Post by TheSheeprug » Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:31 pm

I had a short brewday yesterday and fancied a strongish darker bitter. Having a had a beer before i started I felt a little adventureous and rather made this one up as I went along using what came to hand. I think in hindsight I could have increased the amber malt a bit, but othe than that, any thoughts on how it might turn out or what might have worked better?

Crystal Malt 300 grams 5.5%
Pale Malt 4400 grams 80.7%
Amber Malt 250 grams 4.6%
Crystal Malt, Dark 50 grams 0.9%
Torrefied Wheat 200 grams 3.7%
Jaggery 250 grams 4.6%
Mash 90 min @67c.
Challenger Whole 7.6 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 1.4 oz 40 grams 66.7%
Fuggle Whole 4.9 % 10 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 20 grams 33.3%
Yeast: Nottingham.

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.054
Final Gravity: 1.011
Alcohol Content: 5.6% ABV
Bitterness: 35 EBU
Colour: 33 EBC

I only use sugar in higher gravity beers, but other than that this looks good.
I'm just here for the beer.

Basically unrefined cane sugar, possibly with palm sap and coconut added. It has a rich dark sugar/molasses flavour. Available from Indian/Caribbean shops.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggery

Randy Mosher recommends it in Radical Brewing and I thought I'd give it a try - as you do!
