Is my Wheat Beer FG too low?

Post by sparky Paul » Fri Jul 06, 2007 9:45 am

Currently residing in the fermenting bucket is a John Bull Masterclass Wheat Beer 3Kg kit. Things have been looking fine so far, but the SG today is 1006 and there still seems to be a little activity... is this normal? Anyone else made this kit before?

SG was 1040, maybe a fraction over, and the yeast used was that supplied. Temperature has been 20-21 °C.

It smells fine and looks normal, it's just that I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop another point or two, and an FG of 1004-5 just seems too low. :?

What do you chaps reckon? :-s

You're right DaaB, I should give it a taste - though it does smell perfectly okay.

Apart from the bubbles, what makes me think it hasn't finished yet is the fact that it still has a good covering of the foamy from the yeast head - I only started the thing on Tuesday!

It's been about 2 1/2 days fermenting, it just surprised me that the ferment hasn't slowed in the latter stages like it normally does, and I never get an all malt kit to ferment out to this low a FG.

Anyway, your observations are completely correct as usual, the beer tastes fine. In fact it tastes very good indeed... 8)

A friend of mine has just done this kit and it fermented down to 1005 in a couple of days.

Not having the same luck though. I started the same kit 9 days ago. It started at 1042 then got stuck at 1020. I added dry beer enzyme and it only went down to 1016 where it seems to have stopped. When I added dry beer enzyme to my Woodfordes Wherry it dropped from 1016 to 1006 so I can only put it down to the yeast being no good in the John Bull Wheat beer.

Hey DaaB.....do you think I should add a sachet of Safale04?

what I mean is ..is there any issue with adding an extra sachet of yeast after 9 days in primary and after adding dry beer enzyme?

I added yeast vit at the start. I read somewhere that adding too much can effect the taste...is this true? or would you still recommend adding some extra when I add the safale04?

Also, when adding the safale04 should I sprinkle it on top or hydrate it first?

What the hell is in this kit?

I've just been trying to clean up the fermenter, and the gunge around the top of the bucket is stuck like sh!te to a blanket! It's sticky and looks like raw extract hanging on the side, but not even boiling water will shift it! The boiling water does soften it slightly, and then some scrubbing with a brush and some detergent seems got top side of it - it hasn't dissolved, but come off in little sticky bits... I'm still not conviced it's completely clean. I reckon I'll be shoving some soda in tomorrow...
