Any advice on Sovereign Hops

Post by Jeltz » Sat Apr 27, 2013 1:11 pm

I had a packet of these amongst others for Xmas, but I can't find much info on them other than a suggestion to combine with Goldings or Fuggles,

Has anyone used them as the sole aroma hop in a brew? I like malty bitters and am planning a bitter with Challenger as the bittering and have plenty of Goldings and Fuggles but wandered if they are good on their own?

Not one I like, tried it a couple of times in a single hop brew and was very unimpressed. Waitrose sell Duchy IPA which is an all Sovereign brew, try one of those before committing to brewing with them. Its possible they work better with other hops as you suggest but don't hold your breath.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Sovereign 60 mins 3.8g ltr
Sovereign 15 mins 1.3 g ltr
EKG 15 mins 1.3g ltr
Sovereign 0 mins 1.3g ltr
EKG 0 mins 1.3g ltr

Hi!

I had a summer (pale) ale that was about 5% which I would guess was a SMASH and thought it was nice...
There are few hops I dont like Bodacia being the main one, but each to their own...

Barney's recipe a above looks good!

Instead of committing an entire batch brew a lighly hopped bitter and after fermentation is done put a gallon or so in a seperate carboy and dry hop with the sovereign.
Same advice for the boadicia.
I'm just here for the beer.

I have tried a couple of commercial single hop beers with sovereign. One was by Marstons which was nice and the other was from Marks and Sparks brewed by Elgoods. The M&S beer was a bit too sweet for me. My memories of the marstons beer was that it was also a bit sweet. I got a vanilla flavour from both beers which I assumed came from the hops.
