Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
Hi folks. I have some whole hops I want to dry hop with. From experience, dry hopping in a muslin sack is a little disappointing with whole hops.
I was thinking about blitzing them in the food processor before adding to the beer- has anyone tried this and been happy with the results?

I found this useful

I have done this and it worked a treat, but you must chill the beer for a few days to allow the hops to drop out.

agreed works a treat much better imho, think it helps to have some beer in the blender to get it blending properly
Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I whole heartedly agree with what smdjoachim and wilsoa11111 have said, that's what I do generally.
I did this with a brew, and so for the next one, I just put the same amount of hops into a muslin bag and submersed it. It may have been easier to rack off the beer after conditioning, but the hop flavours imparted by dry hopping were far less.
For that reason, I will be resuming the practice of blitzing (in a medium of the parent beer) the hops.

Do you think using pellets gets you the same effect?

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I've done the blitzing dry and with water, there was little if any difference.
Both methods however are far more effective than just adding the hops whole.

In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.
Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
blitzed some hops last night using food processor and a small amount of cooled, boiled water.
seemed to end up with the same consistency as pellet hops.
bottling directly from fv after crash cool on friday.
Will update once complete in regard to matter settlement.

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
Thanks all, I gave it a go. I will report back.
Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I've just done this today. I used a bit of the beer from the fv and pureed it all in the food processor before adding it directly to the secondary fv, then added the rest of the beer. I intend to dry hop for 5 days, but don't have a fridge suitable for cooling down to 4 degrees. I was thinking of sitting the fv in cold water for a day in an attempt to cool it, either in the bath or outside in a big tub, with the lid tightly on the fv of course!
Also was planning on giving it a good stir every day to mix the hop puree with the beer, it's mostly floating on top at the moment.

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I agree, they are mostly floating on my beer too. I've been shaking the better bottle every day but to no avail. I'm sure we'll have great results!!
Got a few comments when I was blitzing the hops in the processor..

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
Yes so did I. Fortunately I bought the food processor myself, if it was owed by the hop hating wife then I would be in big trouble!mysterio wrote:I agree, they are mostly floating on my beer too. I've been shaking the better bottle every day but to no avail. I'm sure we'll have great results!!

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I do find that they need a stir every so often (gotta be sanitary about this), and for the most they do drop when you lower the temperature (for me, it's only by a few degrees that I can, by putting them in the cellar, but it seems to help somewhat).
Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
Yeah I will sanitise my paddle before stiring. I might just stick the fv in the cupboard under the stairs for a couple of days, I intend to filter and put in another fv before bottling anyway. I intend to build myself a brew fridge at some point to maintain fermentation temperature and enable crash cooling for this purpose... another job to do!hopsinjoor wrote:I do find that they need a stir every so often (gotta be sanitary about this), and for the most they do drop when you lower the temperature (for me, it's only by a few degrees that I can, by putting them in the cellar, but it seems to help somewhat).

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I'm hoping to give this a go myself with my next brew.
I'm also hoping that the hops will settle out after a week without any cooling
Needless to say, I'll be following the reports of how well they settle with little/no cooling with interest.
Cheers Tom

Re: Blitzing whole hops for dry hopping
I've just given my fv a good stir to get the hops mixed in better and it smells amazing! I'm going for 5 days then either sit the fv in some cold water or the cupboard under the stairs for a few days. I assume any hop particles will drop down to the bottom of the bottle eventually, but this brew smells so great I will want to drink it as soon as possible.soupdragon wrote:I'm hoping to give this a go myself with my next brew.

I will let you know how it goes anyway
