Ideas for Oakham Green Devil IPA

Post by Monkeybrew » Fri Sep 13, 2013 4:18 pm

I was at a beer festival last week and tried some Oakham Green Devil IPA 6.0%.

It was one of the best beers that I've ever tasted and would love to brew something like it for my first AIPA style brew.

I can't even seem to find out what hops are in this brew.

If anyone has any ideas on this brew, I would be very grateful.

Can't vouch for the accuracy or otherwise but a google search brings this up at the top of the list

I haven't tasted it, but it sure sounds like they simply brewed a bigger version of this:

Oakham Citra
Oakham Ales in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, UK
Style: American Pale Ale
ABV: 4.6%
IBU: ≈35
Colour: golden amber
Grainbill: 92% Maris Otter, 8% Pale Crystal Malt
Hops: Citra (early, late, and dry hop)
Yeast: "Chico strain"=Sierra Nevada/Siebel BRY96/White Labs WLP001/Wyeast 1056/Safale US-05

Oakham do some cracking beer, only seen this one once http://www.oakhamales.com/carioca.html

''COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A sunshine gold beer, with a grassy/ soft fruit aroma. Initial light, sweet and tangy fruit flavours develop into rich, deep, peach and gooseberry with a hint of caramel leading to a moreish bitterness. Also contains ground Guarana berries, which are native to the Amazon rainforest and known as a natural stimulant ''

"Single hopped (Citra) IPA"

Lol, I had read quite a few of the reviews on ratebeer, but hadn't noticed the single hopped citra bit!

I am amazed at the amount flavours it had for a single hopped beer.

It's an awesome beer fresh from the cask Seymour!

I can't even begin to describe the explosion of different flavours that I was experiencing. I often find that this style of beer is all grapefruit astringent hoppiness, but this brew was rich fruitiness/piney, slightly sweet malt with a short sharp refreshing bitterness that just begged you to take another slurp!

I've only tried 2 other (bottled) commercial single hopped citra beers, 1 being Oakham Citra and the other was Crouch Vale's Citra. Both of which I didn't really like TBH, as I found them over bitter with minimal malt and hop flavour. Also the aroma reminded me of a Tom Cat!!

I may start by tweaking half of a Woodfordes Sundew kit with additional DME and 100g of Citra pellets that I've got.

I've currently got a little kit adaption on the go as an experiment.

It's basically 1 x 1.5kg can from 2 can Woodfordes Sundew kit + 500g of Light DME brewed to 10.5L.

OG 1.058

I boiled 25g of Citra Pellets for 10mins & then steeped another 25g from 80C for 30mins.

The Sundew kit is pretty tasteless as standard and has low EBU of approx 28, so after brewing it slightly short, adding the DME and then boiling the Citra, the EBU is approx 51.

My question is, how much Citra should I dry hop with?

I've got 50g left, so could use the lot at about 5g/L.

Sure, why not? It's your experiment, after all.

It doesn't sound like anyone has any specific information from the brewers themselves, so you're in uncharted territory. Tread softly, carry a big stick, and take good notes. :)

Well, just tried the first bottle of this brew (I went for the 50g dry hop in the end) after 4 weeks in the bottle, and it's bloody good. Not as rich in malt as Oakhams AG brew, but certainly an awesome kit adaption IMHO.
