There is one small improvement I can suggest. That is to mount the fan on studs from the bottom of the box. That way you will have a smooth surface to sit your flask on. By the way do you get motor whine using a rheostat?

You may also find that a 1 litre flask is too small to grow enough yeast to pitch into a big beer. The problem is that the amount of yeast you pitch into a given volume of wort (DME) doesn't scale in the way you might think. Any given cell count can only grow with the resources available too it. Think of it as sheep in a field, there is only so much food that will allow the flock to flourish.I recommend Chris White's (of Whitelabs fame) book imaginatively entitled Yeast. There is a much better explanation of this in there.

Nice build, but I must ask, was it hard to get the 4 mag's to lineup, most peeps just use either 2 mag's or 4 mag's if they are stacked up ie, 1 each side but each side has 2,
Unless you use a small/short stire bar the inside ones are almost redundant.

But if it works for you, then that's all that really matters.

And also with a conical flask, the more liquid you have in it the less surface area for gas exchange. I know it's being stired, but it could be a limiting factor.
I still have not attempted the sums, so I don't know what the yeast count would/could be givin any sized flask. But what ever it is, it must be better than not using one.

I'm sure it will help many peeps build there own, as pictures paint lots of answers.

I did think of putting the machine screws through the bottom but only as an after thought unfortunately! Nevermind!

I also checked a few calculators for starter size that seemed to suggest 1l would be fine for a 5g batch (unless I go to extreme abv's)

I read somewhere it was better to mount the fan from the bottom of the case and then mount the mag's on somthing (higher up) so to move them away from the mags in the fan, as it interferes with the field

I ant tried it yet, but I have plans for my mk2, along with many other plans.

It's not the starter size it's the cell count you start with that matters. The same number of cells pitched into a 1 litre and 2 litre starter will grow a different number of cells.
