Kit Quality and storage

Post by Mashman » Sat Jun 13, 2015 9:29 am

Hi

I have been all grain brewing for many years and know the quality is up there with commercial beer but have not made wine for many years. How does the quality of a premium wine kit compare to a supermarket wine at say £5-£6 a bottle?

What about storing, and serving the wine from a corny keg? Minimum CO2 pressure, just enough to dispense and no bottling :D

Thanks

I must admit not much difference with Wine kits to buying a bottle of wine in shops.

I have only made reds and the cheap kits are OK compared to budget sub £5 wine after 3 months but can be terrible before that, decent kits like beaverdale vary from £8-£15+ to the top end if aged a year and are OK soon after there bottled but its worth the wait (my favourite is there merlot even though its not normally one of my preferred wines). I don't think wine would age well in a corny so I would recommend it only if you are doing a cheap kit for OK wine and drinking it young not if you want a great wine. I am far from a great wine taster so all just my opinion hope it helps.

I think any kit that you add the Oak chips gives the wine that aged oak taste

I can highly recommend Beaverdale gerwurztraminer (that might be spelt wrong :D )
It easily trumps most shop bought whites in fact most of our friends and family didn't
believed I'd made it at first.
For me reds are harder to compare as they turn out quite different to shop bought bottles

I will try that wine
My bottles don't last long enough in our house due to husband and friends drinking them
