Hi All
After a bit of a browse it seems there's two (maybe more) recipes floating around the net. One on BYO and one Brewtoad.
Has anyone done either/both? If so which do you think tastes closest?
Cheers Tom

Re: Lagunitas IPA
I attempted the Jamil (brewing network) clone this year, having listened to his interview with the head brewer at Lagunitas. 2009 if I recall.
Two things are for sure from my attempt: if they are getting that level of hop aroma and taste from the relatively meagre hop bill given, then they must be driving them far better than I managed;secondly, I don't know how they keep the WLP002 profile so clean. I did a decent starter and controlled the fermentation as specified, but the English esters were all to present. I ended up with a very pleasant pale ale, but nothing like Lagunitas.
If I were to do it again, I'd probably use US -05, burtonise the water a little more, and up the late/dry hops a great deal.

I've downloaded the broadcast, will give it a proper listen to when I get the chance.MTW wrote:I attempted the Jamil (brewing network) clone this year, having listened to his interview with the head brewer at Lagunitas. 2009 if I recall.

Regarding the yeast.....
I've never used a liquid yeast but I've heard the smack packs are generally reliable. I've also read somewhere that the dry equivalent to the Fullers strain (or as close as possible) is, of all things, the basic cheap Muntons ale yeast so might try that on my first attempt.
I don't rack into a secondary vessel when dry hopping but the bit of the broadcast I did hear referred to yeast in suspension dragging the hop oils down and out of the beer. I've always dry hopped after 5-7 days in primary then kegged from there, might try getting the beer off the yeast next time. Plenty of people have said that they've never had a problem leaving the beer on the yeast and to be fair, neither have I, but I do struggle to get anything like the hop hit I want from my methods.
One other thing I need to read up on is the affect of a higher alcohol level on the overall flavour of the beer. I'm sure a brewer once told me that a higher ABV will help to lift hop flavours. I notice that the Jamil version is around 5.2% which is a bit shy of the actual beer, maybe if it was a bit stronger it might get closer to the original? Could be talking b*llocks there though.
Cheers Tom
