Styrian Stunner #2 19.10.2007 a few pics

Coming to the end of a fairly succesful brewday...

4.5kg Marris Otter
0.5kg Torrified Wheat

75g 3% Styrian at 60 mins
55g 3% Styrian at 0mins 80' (steeping for one hour as I type)
20g 3% Styrian Dry in secondary

With it being cold, my mash tun lost a bit of heat so had to top up with a litre hot water.

Treated the water with half a campden tablet and used half a whirfloc at 15 mins - looking at the sample I have taken, half is enough for a 23 litre brew.

Finished up with 23 litres at 1.042 ~ 66% efficiency. I think that could be due to the mash temperature going lower - what do you think?

Might start looking at getting my pH right, see how that affects things.

Right on the 23 L mark this time

1/2 a Whirlfloc worked...

Below is a pic of the yeast (S-04) from my challenger brew. I don't recall it looking like this before. This went from 1.040 right down to 1.006.

Great pics.

Interesting that nearly all of the hop seed is around the perimeter of the hop bed. Mine seem to disperse overall.

What type of manifold do you use?

Nice one - mine is just coming to the boil, should be about ready to throw the first hops in now!

Working on a deadline though - got to be showered, shaved, changed and at the bus stop ready for a night out in less than 2 hours, so I figure I will probably get no further than boiled and cooled thisafternoon. If I am almost sober when I get back I may be in a state to aerate and pitch... but we shall see! That may wait until the morning.....

Going to have to try one of those Styrian Stunners at some stage

My first Styrian was good but my technique wasn't quite as tight - batch sparge was incorrectly calculated.

I use a diy jobby for a manifold - a Wilko's splatter guard rolled up

Basically this one below but in the boiler - made a copper manifold for the mash tun which seems to be working well

Might put some cross bars in if I get around to it...

Hi RT, Looks like a good brew day 8)
Below is a pic of the yeast (S-04) from my challenger brew. I don't recall it looking like this before. This went from 1.040 right down to 1.006.
S04 does that every now and then, though usually I get it using protafloc,
have a look at page 2 here
