My first AG!!!! - with some pics

Post by ben » Wed Nov 07, 2007 11:22 pm

Well, it finally happened last Saturday!! I had a great time, didn't take as long as I thought - well it did but I wrote off a day but I didn't stand over the mash for an hour and a half or watch the boil either..Any way here's some pics of how it went and my (very) basic setup. The recipe was from Dave Line's book - McEwans IPA...

First off the mash (My mash tun is the bucket inside a bucket with a load of holes drilled in the inside one and a tap on the outside bucket. Its wrapped in 2 alternate layers of tin foil and camping mats.

Then the wort draining during the sparge

Then the boil - I used a tea urn I bought off eBay - worked perfectly.
Image
I made an immersion cooler from copper tube but didn't use it. I just left it outside for 8 hours or so...it's quite cold in Scotland!
Sorry there's no photos of the fermentation - its nearly finished now and ready for secondary or barreling...When I've poured off a sneaky pint I'll put another photo of it. I did worry about the beer clearing but don't think I've any worries...It's no worse than the kits I've been using.

AG....I love it...there's no going back now. Took a sample for hydrometer reading tonight and had to taste the sample....pleasantly surprised by my efforts

well done Ben glad you had a great day. Now you just got to get production levels up to comsumption levels  or you too will be drinking it from the fermenter

Good work Ben 8)

I use a bucket-in-a-buket mash tun as well, and it has served me well for many a brew.

Nice work Ben :D .

Just one tip m8 if you’re using that extension cable (in your pic) with your boiler unwind it, it will get VERY hot like that.
