How does one work out the thermal mass of a mash tun?

One does not bother :!:

What One does is to fill ones Mash tun with Hot water to preheat ones Mash Tun. This effectively reduces the Thermal Mass of ones Mash Tun to zero!

Pretty much you determine it empirically - which translate to when you're using software programs, you already know the strike temp you use and the target temp so you adjust the thermal mass until you get the answer you expect.
