Help a Noobie?

Post by PMH0810 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:25 pm

Hi all,

Have come back to homebrew after 15 years and have a query about my Telford's Export Ale kit.

4 days into fermentation and there is only a little head now but there are lots of little (about 1/6" diameter) tan rafts/islands floating on the head.

Is this normal? Have I done something wrong? I followed the instructions explicitly (I am an accountant, rules are rules!).

Sounds ok to me!
Im a relative newcomer and a couple of my brews have had similar on the surface.
I take it smells ok?

Its perfectly normal, the 'rafts' are simply chunks of protein that make it into the wort following the boil

Thank you!

Yup - smells okay (actually remember homebrew in the old days smelling much worse); smells like beer and it's all I can do to stop myself plunging right in now.

Concerns assuaged - thank you all for your advice; hydrometer on standby!
