Hillbilly Pilsner

Post by Horden Hillbilly » Wed Dec 26, 2007 9:14 pm

Hi everyone,

It's almost that time again, a long overdue start to my new brewing season tomorrow! :)

As we are in the cooler months of the year, I will be kicking off with a Pilsner for Mrs H.

Est OG 1042, based on 79% effiency.

Pilsner Malt 2784g.
Carapils Malt 398g.
Flaked Maize 398g.
Brewing Sugar 398g.
Saaz hops start of boil, 20 EBU.
Saflager Yeast.

Basically, all I have done to change this from my tried & tested Lager recipe is to do a straight swap with Pilsner Malt instead of Lager Malt & Carapils Malt instead of British Caramalt at Mrs H's request.

Looks like a good basic recipe, although I would probably ditch the brewing sugar and use more malt :D but I guess you are after a pub lager :=P

I'm hoping to get my last brew of the year done this weekend which will also be a lager (Pre Pro CAP), so I'm looking forward to hearing how your brew goes

I did make a all malt lager for Mrs H a while back, she preferred the brew with the 10% sugar in. I ain't gonna argue with her!

I did a lager based on this recipe early December. I might have altered the proprtions just slightly (don't have recipe with me). Should be ready to taste this brew in 2 weeks. As I was bottling the other day I tasted some of the green beer and was quite impressed. There are days a simple 'non continental' lager comes in handy too! (Summer mostly).

I have now sampled this beer (I needed 3.5 pints to be sure) and was very surprised at how well balanced it is. This brew will definetely be repeated. Well done HH keep up the good work!
