Baird's Malt
Baird's Malt
Hi
Is anyone using Baird's MO/Pale Malt at the moment, or has used it and moved away from it?
Brewery brokers are offering "pale ale" malt at £480/tonne excl. VAT and delivery but that seems pretty cheap. Their MO by comparison is £538/tonne. Any of the pro-brewers that come on here given it a try?
Cheers!

Re: Baird's Malt
using Bairds MO at the moment, but it's actually a 50/50 mix of pale and MO. It still works reasonably well in maltier beers such as 80/- and gives a decent body to a Pale Ale. I used to use 100% MO until the price went sky high. I have inadvertently acquired 200kg pale malt, which I'm not too happy about using, but it might do for a Bitter or Pale Ale.
Cheers

Re: Baird's Malt
apart from having a relative in a brewery is there any local(scottish) suppliers you could buy say 100kg Bairds (or Crisps) MO without incurring a £30++ delivery charge ??

I used Baird's for a while but found it was giving low extract, so moved to Warminster or Crisp, which are consistently good.oz11 wrote:Hi

I used Bairds for a while but also suffered low extraction and the crush was a bit hit and miss, stick to fawcetts now.Dave S wrote:I used Baird's for a while but found it was giving low extract, so moved to Warminster or Crisp, which are consistently good.oz11 wrote:Hi

Re: Baird's Malt
You could try Simpsons in Berwick (Crisps sell by the ton). Why not ask your local brewer, if he's half-decent he'll sell for cost plus part of his delivery charge. If you're near Fife, I can oblige.roscoe wrote:apart from having a relative in a brewery is there any local(scottish) suppliers you could buy say 100kg Bairds (or Crisps) MO without incurring a £30++ delivery charge ??
Re: Baird's Malt
Thanks for the tips.
So can you just drive up to Simpsons and buy 6 sacks of grain, or do you need to do all that account stuff. What kind of price would you guess for 25kg sacks of Simpsons MO.

Re: Baird's Malt
I kinda thought that all the 'scottish' malt production was biased massively to whisky types of malt and the beer malts mostly came from England on the back of a truck.
I was hoping there was some local pale/MO about.

Re: Baird's Malt
I stopped buying from Simpsons because they increased prices tremendously - under a ton is of no interest to them. Best thing is to phone them and ask them for a price. They may or may not deal with you and the price might be higher than going direct to Brupaks, but becaus postage is a killer for 100kg it might be worth a try. Brewing barley is malted in Scotland, but all my malt comes from England.

Re: Baird's Malt
We're currently using Bairds with their 'Fine Crushed Pale' which seems to be helping with the inconsistencies in their regular crushed malt where you can sometimes find loads of whole un-crushed grains.
If it was up to me I'd be using someone else for our malt.

Re: Baird's Malt
Fawcetts minimum order is 10 sacks, although that is for collection. You'd have to ring them to see if its different for palletised orders. They are very friendly and approachable so its worth a punt. Never had any problems with their malt or crush. You can specify a crush with them as well IIRC. I just get the standard/medium when we order.
