Noob Question
Re: Noob Question
Yeah you need an airlock if you're going to put your lid on tightly. But for people who don't use an airlock, they don't use a lid at all. Or if they do it just sits gently on top. Not tightly at all.

With the more you do, what seems confusing now becomes second nature. Leaving you room to do the more advanced stuff. Like most activities I suppose.

Re: Noob Question
I'm puzzled. I have four barrels with rubber seals and metal clips, two fitted with airlocks fitted into tight fitting rubber bungs. The first brew started bubbling within 24 hours, the second been in 36 and nothing. Carefully taken lid off and it has a foam on it, and checked lid and seal and it seems fine. Hydrometer reading indicates it is fermenting (it's definitely heading in the right direction) but no bubbles. Am a bit perplexed.
Considered swapping lids over but then decided to leave alone. Just don't understand it.

Well the LHBS was out of stock of most things so nothing happened this weekend
Gonna have to wait 2 week to get going now
Bugger. As they say.

Got sick of waiting and did a kit. So far it looks and tastes like beer, so thats a start.
Started testing for the real deal......now put back until after the bank holiday......struggling to boil a full 5 gal of water though. Hope i can boil 3gal at least

Re: Noob Question
which LHBS? I take it from your handle that you're in Bradford. I'm in Baildon, IMHO the best shop in the area is Morley Home Brew on Queen Street, Morley. Open Mon-Sat 0930-1630, 1800 Thurs. Abbey Home Brew in Kirkstall next best but even shorter opening hoursWell the LHBS was out of stock of most things so nothing happened this weekend

Re: Noob Question
I get a reasonable boil of about 2.5 gallons on my stove with one (gas) ring going. If I put the pot in the middle and set all four going it gets a volcanic boil going, but it's also a massive waste of gas (in my opinion).Bradfordlad wrote:Got sick of waiting and did a kit.
