Bottling

Hello everyone

I have in the fermenter My murphys stout which is nearly ready for bottling, now when i transfer from the fermenter to the bottles can i run the liquid through a fine mesh or even a coffee filter ? to stop to much sediment going in to the bottle?

I know i still need yeast in the bottle to had some fizz and condition the beer, will filtering take all the yeast out ?

also i have some dme left to prime the bottles with, is it best to put in the bottles first or the fermenter and than bottle ? :?

To filter without oxidising and ruining the beer needs some specialist equipment. When you bottle leave the beer 2-4 weeks in the bottle and it will carb up and the yeast will stick to the bottom. Be patient and the yeast will settle compact and tight in the bottle.

If your primary fv is the only bucket you have then running straight into the bottles isn't a problem. I wouldn't bother filtering, any yeast that goes into your bottles will drop to the bottom anyway. I used to put the priming sugar into the bottles first, it was just what I found easier. If you do have another vessel then I would make a small solution with the priming sugar (boil water in a pot, add sugar and then cool) and add that to the empty vessel. Then I'd run the beer into that for bottling (removing it from the sediment in the primary fv). Then I'd fill the bottles from the sediment free second bucket.
There may be better ways of doing this, this is just the way I've found easiest.
