stand for biab bag

Post by noble ox » Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:17 pm

Hi Brewers :D
I would like to make a false bottom to support the bag, so is there any reason why I cant make 1 from 15mm copper tube almost like a cake rack ? solderless if need be.
I will be using a propane gas ring
Thanks

When I started BIAB I used a cake rack. I then realised that with such a large volume of water the decline in temperature was minimal so I would never need to turn on the heat whilst the bag was still in the boiler. I followed the KISS principle and ditched the rack.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

As vacant says, if you lag the pot there shouldn't be any need to have a rack. However when I get really smart and do stepped mashes (protein rest, maltose, dex and mashout rests) I apply bursts of heat and stir the grain with a paddle until it's at the next temperature stage, and I rest the bag on one of these curved roasting racks from a kitchen shop.

Keeps it off the element - in my case - and cups the bag nicely if you peg it round the top of the pot while stirring.
