Funny Taste

Post by Aberdeenbrewer » Fri Feb 13, 2009 10:19 am

Hey folks.

I bottles my first brew (a Youngs Lager kit) a week past Wednesday. Now I know I shouldn't be rushing these things but couldn't resist popping the top off one to try after a week.

Problem is although the beer had a slight carbonation it had a fairly strong taste of cider!! I had a taste before I bottled and was fairly happy with the result.

OG was 1040 and FG was 1006 for 2 days before bottling. I bottled with 1tsp sugar per 500ml bottle (some other posts on the forum advised a tsp instead of 1/2 tsp for Lager)

The bottles have been in a cupboard indoors for a week and I have now moved them to the garage to lager for another couple of weeks.

Can anyone put my mind at rest and tell me that they've had this problem and this "cider" taste will go away oer the next while?? and should I leave them indoors for longer or will they be better in the garage now?? :?

Thanks

What temp did you ferment at?
It is my understanding that high temperatures whilst fermenting can cause fruity flavours.

Ferment temps were on the lower scale as I had to ferment in the garage (winter in Aberdeen aswell!!). FV had a thermostatic aquarium type heater set at 21 degrees.

What sugar did you brew with? And were you strict with cleanliness?

p.s Patience is very overrated

Hi Kev

I used 1kg of youngs brewing sugar during fermentation. I used the same type for priming.

Used steriliser on everything and think I was very thorough!

Thanks

hi aberdeen

ive been experimenting since xmas and have done a coopers lager, edme german lager and a youngs brewbuddy.
i wouldnt say i was disappointed but tasted within a few weeks of bottling, they all have that appley twang you describe.

ive got two batches down the cellar that i plan to leave for a couple of months to see if they improve.
it seems to me that a lager kit can never really replicate the type of lagers you can buy in the pub/shop, probably something to do with the whole lagering
process. ive also been reading up on the history of brewing and where beer came from and it does go some way to explain this.

Thing is I dont brew Lager so can't really help past the obvious points, can't stand lager to be honest, I always feel the required chilling is to hide any 'off' flavours that might be present, call me cynical

well i do know what you mean there kev,

thats why they started super chilling guiness and the like to hide some of the flavour.
but you cant beat sitting outside the john bull here in torquay in the summer, with an ice cool glass of 1664. i dont know what they do
to it down there but its the best pint of lager in the bay.

I've got a Cooper's lager that will be kegged tomorrow after 2 weeks fermenting and it has a very strong smell of apples too (haven't tasted it yet).

Well I kegged the Coppers this morning and tasted it. Slight taste of apples but not as much as the smell from the last week. Tasted quite nice actually.
