Can I add hops to the keg?

Post by Operator » Sat Mar 07, 2009 11:40 am

I've left this a bit late as I'm just about to keg my latest brew, Ive had a quick search but not found what I'm looking for. Can I add a small muslin of hops to the keg and leave it in whilst it primes, conditions and gets drunk by yours truly? I've read about dry hopping to add aroma, this is all I want to do, no more flavour or bitterness. I've boiled a muslin to sterilize it and I've got some dried goldings ready to go.

If I can do this with no I'll effects, do I need to do anything else or just chuck it in. As always, any swift replies will be most appreciated. :D

Yes you can and it will give you a good hop aroma. Some people only leave the hops in there for a week or so then fish them back out, others leave them in the whole time the keg is being drunk.

In general, a little goes a long way so try just putting a very small quantity of hops in there at first. You'll be surprised what a difference just a "heaped teaspoon" of hops will make.
