American Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada-ish)

Hi guys,

Feedback needed on this recipe - making my first american hop monster started off as a SNPA clone but now I am just looking to make a nice easy drinking american ale. Rob doesnt stock American which I would have liked to try out of interest but Pale malt will suffice.

Sorry about my odd batch sizes, percentages may be more useful than weights:

American Pale Ale

Batch size 35 Litres

Grist:
Pale Malt (5 EBC) 7000g - 90.3%
Crystal Malt, Pale (60 EBC) - 500g - 6.5%

Priming Sugar, Household White (0 EBC) 250g - 3.2%

Hopping Schedule:
Cascade (5.7 %) 75g @ 90 mins
Cascade (5.7 %) 60g @ 15 mins
Cascade (5.7 %) 65g @ 0 mins

Mash Efficiency: 80 %
Original Gravity: 1.054
Final Gravity: 1.012
Alcohol Content: 5.4% ABV
Bitterness: 40 IBU
Colour: 15 EBC

Fermentation - 2 weeks @ 18c with Safale S-05

I made Mysterio's SNPA, absolutely fantastic, better than the original!

I based my starting point on that in terms of crystal to pale ratio.

Shame it is out of stock at present at the Malt Miller.

Eh up dean, I'm sure that this is a daft question, but I'm fairly new to this, when the sugar is classed as part of the grist does this mean that it goes in the mash, or do you just mean that the sugar is used for priming at the bottling stage? Thanks matt

I'd be tempted to move the 90 min cascade to 5min and use a bit of Magnum at 90 for bittering. The more late hops the better with APA's! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

I thought about using some magnum but have slimmed down all my ins bills to try and save some money! Maybe I should get one pack of high alpha hops to bitter all my brews and save the other hops for late additions.

That's what I do, Magnum are cheaper than all the fancy hops and you need less of them.

+1 on Mysterio's SNPA recipe - it may not use the same hops but i defy anyone to tell the difference! oh and easily repeatable too!
