brewing a stout tomorrow and was thinking of a recipie along these lines

4 kg pale
300 g roast barley
200 g black malt

40 g northern brewer 90 mins

mash at 68 C

is that about right? we're novices and still learning the noble art!

That's an awful lot of black malt in your recipe. I would drop it to about 50g, and add some chocolate and crystal malt to the mix. You might find it'll suit your taste better. If your more after an Irish style stout add some flaked barley to the mash as well. 68c Mash? I prefer my mash temp to be around 65c for a stout. Hope this helps and good luck with your brew :D

thanks - i found the recepie that you posted for ordinary stout and it sounds great, so it looks as if i'll be brewing that instead.
no first gold in the house so i'll be using northern brewer or challenger instead.

Nice one, Northern or Challenger will be fine. I only used First Gold as I have 3.5kg of them. You'll notice that some of my upcoming recipes will seem to be using a lot First Gold. Good luck with your brew, and just to let you know Ordinary is a cracking pint :D
