US-UK Face Off

Post by jimp2003 » Sun Jun 16, 2013 9:12 pm

Evening All.

I have just realised that I have a lack of pale beer ready for the summer so I will be brewing a batch of wort then splitting it to produce two single hopped beers.

As I have not brewed with either of these hops before I would appreciate any advice from those that have with regards to hop schedule, possible combining wth other hops etc.

Here is the grainbill to produce 2 x 13l batches:

Original Gravity (OG): 1.050 (°P): 12.4
Final Gravity (FG): 1.013 (°P): 3.3
Alcohol (ABV): 4.91 %
Colour (SRM): 7.8 (EBC): 15.3

76.27% Belgian Pale Malt (Dingemans)
8.47% Caramalt
8.47% Munich
6.78% Flaked Corn

Single step Infusion at 66°C for 75 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Batch 1 (US):

Bitterness (IBU): 24.7 (Tinseth)

10g Belma (12.1% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
35g Belma (12.1% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
55g Belma (12.1% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)

Batch 2 (UK):

Bitterness (IBU): 26.1 (Tinseth)

25g Sussex (7.5% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
40g Sussex (7.5% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
35g Sussex (7.5% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)

Yeast will probably be dried as I have it in stock - either S04 or Neale's West Coast Ale.

Let me know what you think guys!

Cheers.

Jim

Belma produces a clean bittering however it pairs better with something like Centennial or Columbus for flavour and aroma if its boldness that you are after. On the other hand if you really want to see all of its properties then go ahead with the single hop, it will still be pleasant.

Cheers

the british pale sounds lovely, esp if the sussex hops are a bit like fuggles, i tried this kinda deal with pilgrim as a single hop

hope u have more luck as pilgrim is a bit dull on its own, dont get me wrong nice wee hop, good even bitterness and somewhat fruity (kinda gives an english ale yeast flavour- odd as was using s-05)

Just out of interest jimp. Wont that make an extended brew day, or will you do two simultaneous boils. And are the late bittering additions for @ 30 mins for any reason rather than a full60+
Just like trying new ideas!

S-04/Whitbread-B yeast for the UK version, and Neale's West Coast Ale yeast for the US version. That way, you're doing a more true-to-style contrast & comparison.

timbo - the hop additions all going in late was something I read about somewhere and thought I would just give it a go. The brewday will inevitably be longer but I am going to try boiling one on gas and the other in the electric HLT.

seymour - good call on the yeasts!

Cheers!
