New homebrewing book

Post by bitter_dave » Wed Nov 15, 2006 2:56 pm

I got an e-mail from Amazon alerting me to this new book that will be published very soon:

http://www.crowoodpress.co.uk/2004/book ... 6126+899+8

I obviously have no idea if it's any good, but as British homebrew books come along so infrequently I just thought I'd mention it.

I may give it a browse if my local bookshop happens to get a copy (which I guess is unlikely)

Hi all – I’ve a copy of BREWING LAGER by the same John Alexander off Ebay despite being dated 1986 a useful, well written and interesting book. I'll look out for his new one - although I’m no expert still on training kits and liver conditioning, feeling left behind by a few members rapid progress.

BTW...slowly getting All Mash Kit together a good 6 mths now, wanting to keep it simple if I start on the high tech route I know I would get carried away and in loads of trouble - so far.

30 L Bruheat Boiler with Thermostat.

30 L Boiler with home made hop strainer 2 x elbows 10’’ 15mm copper pipe 200 2mm holes drilled past away an hour.

2 x 30L fermenting buckets

5g Fermenter Barrel

28/30 L Thermos Cool Box home made strainer as per Daab’s design – Thanks

4 x Cornies and Twin output 3 gauge Co2 Reg of Norm

2 x 6kg Co2 Pub Gas cylinders

Fridge second hand in outside utility room for chilled dispensing takes 2 cornies (more wanted/needed) both piped up through the wall to 2 shinny flow control taps in the kitchen above the work top under a cupboard in a matching box one tap with 3/16’’ the other with 5/16’’ 1.5/2m runs

15m 10mm copper tubing can’t pluck up courage to start bending into a coil I know I’ll make a bugger of it  waiting for tutorial Daab :D .

2 x Digital thermometers one for dispensing fridge/fermenting fridge and one with a probe for brew day.

All dry ingredients (and waiting for the right moment) for first 23L All Mash Brew a Grolsch clone page 130 Wheelers BCEB AT HOME for the only reason it’s the page Joe at (Leyland HB) opened his book at and it’s a busy shop.

4.13 kg Lager Malt
7.3 kg Flaked Maize
30g Saaz hops
25g Hallertau hops
20g Irish Moss
Lager Yeast

All above x 2 for a second go if/when it all goes t*ts up :(

After asking around mates for a suitable fridge waited ages I got one the the next day Joiner/kitchen fitter we used for a recent job turns up with another can’t believe it which also takes 2 cornies at a squease. Wanting a warm/cool insulated fermenting cupboard I decided to fit a 1’ 45w tube heater and cheap ch 0-30c room stat works a treat, can also be used as a fridge - both free and in good condition  saved them both a tipping charge.

Sorry if I've waffled on in the wrong place on your post BD and I know pic’s are mandatory - don’t know how to

Hi DAT,

Sounds like you have more brewing kit there than I do :o

More than enough to get on with your first all grain - you just need to get your copper tube bent into a chiller shape and you're away. Are you planning an immersion chiller or CFC?

Don't be hard on yourself if your first try at all grain is less than perfect, until you get familiar with it, there always seems so much to do....panic...

Anyway, sounds like you're all set for the big day :D

Good luck \:D/

EB planning on a immersion chiller seems easier to make, use and boil sanitise.

Amazon is always a good bet for used books. I got an ex-library copy of Greg Noonan's 'New Brewing Lager Beer' for £1.20.

You're probably right there. As Daab says, wrap the copper around a fairly stiff former and you will be fine...

Be careful if you use a demijohn as a former as you could end up with something like this
