Nice work scooby

Interesting to hear your view on the flavour/aroma when using the hop back. This will be my next project 8)
Do these 'own brand' versions have the same temperature ratings as the Lock and Lock stuff?
I'm not sure, but I would imagine if they've got microwave safe on them, then they should be alright

i.e. Tesco? M&S?
I think I've bought Lock 'n' lock brand from Waitrose before. As is to be expected from Waitrose they're good but expensive.

The stuff bought from Tesco has a microwave symbol and 110ºC moulded into the base. But as I don't normally take much notice of the wifes equipment  I don't know if it was Tesco own brand or a proprietary brand :(

Although Lock & lock are good for 130c they only recommend reheating and not cooking in them.

They have a silicon rubber seal and as DaaB noticed they are slightly more expensive for good reason.

A little bit of cross over here with the plate chiller thread but they're related issues...kind of.

Would using a hop back negate the use of a filter when using a cfc, ie, would the hops in the hop back act as a pre filter

I think they might but I'll use a filter JIC to start.

Scooby/anybody,

What sort of quantity of hops do you use in your hop back ?

I used 10g in my first brew as that was the end of a pack, and 15g in the second Vossy, that is what I would dry hop with, both were superior to dry hoping in terms of aroma, and of course flavour. Its early days but I guees you could use 20-25g

Both times it was Goldings 5.5 alpha yet to try different hops.

The manifold I use is 22mm with 3mm holes the same as the manifold in the boiler, the wort passes through a fine sieve after the CFC to aerate and catch hop bits etc, there are always a few seeds in there, (I presume that is what you want to filter)

The hops will act as a filter but not a FINE filter.

Vossy, when I got my L & L container I saw a ss tea strainer that was almost the same dia and fine enough to work a treat.
