Vossy, regarding your heat exchanger, do you have any photos or a description of it? Mine causes some back pressure such that I find it better to prime the pump before connecting to the HE.

If there's too much back pressure then that may be your problem. Can you blow through it with just slight resistance?

Here it is 7, ignore the big cool box part

My flow rate has increased gr8ly. I'll measure it when the water has cooled down.

I'm definately going to have to widen the holes on the return manifold.

I can blow through the HE no probs. I also prime my pump b4 attaching to the HE.

Oh yes, I remember now.

If you can blow through it then that's good.

How about a photo with it all set up as it was when you had your snake incident?

What about trying it without the recirculation manifold. See if that reduces the pressure. If so then maybe it could do with a few mods. Are you using a slotted copper recirculation manifold?

Pic coming, but the snakes caused a mess...you have been warned.

It even got my Dachshunds

The return manifold definately requires some adjustment. The flow out of the holes stands at least 15mm high when the manifold is brought out of the top of the water.

Most of the resistance is coming from the HE though. I've replaced the hose with 15mm JG pipe so I could test the system thermally.

I ran it for 45 min for the results in the post above with the return manifold 1" beneath the surface.

First off - jubilee clip on the PVC from the mash tun to the copper at the pump to cope with the back pressure might do the trick.

I thought the stainless vessel was the mash tun and the cool box was the heat exchanger. Or am I wrong?

Oh you mean copper pipe

The back pressure caused the hose to come off at the HE inlet.

I did attach a jubilee, it leaked as it caused the warm hose to kink on tightening.

I even tried a cable tie and had the same kinking causing a leak

You won't get back pressure on that bit of pipe Andy, That's the input to the pump so will be sucking :D

How are you regulating the flow Vossy? Without it I can understand the pipe blowing off  You could try reducing the flow with a ball valve.
