Boiler false bottom

Post by crow_flies » Fri Oct 20, 2006 12:16 pm

Anyone suggest a way ofadding a false bottom to a boiler? At the moment I'm using a basic 30l plastic bin with kettle element and nylon tap. I get good hot and cold breaks, but last week when brewing a batch I just could not get the trub to settle, it just sat at about 2/3 of the volume - beautiful clear wort on top, cotton wool crud below it. Will a basic copper filter pipe fitted to the tap do the job or is there another better way to do this?

I was wondering if a fit a copper pipe filter to the tap and then free boil hops rather than contain them in the muslin bag if i would get a filter effect.

Hi (and welcome),

I use a slotted copper filter in my boiler and boil the hops loose. The hops do filter the crap. I'd give this a go I believe it's easier than making a false bottom.

great pics! - i'll give it a go - the copper ones you have fitted - youve adapted them to sit down to the bottom of the bin have you?
