qty of gypsum

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

qty of gypsum

Post by Kev888 » Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:26 pm

Hi all,

just thinking about moving towards all grain and introducing gypsum to my stock cupboard, and notice that most suppliers seem to offer 100g pots of it. However, the youngs label i can see in one picture suggests a rate of 1oz or 28g gypsum per gal, so for say a total mash and sparge volume of 7gals (before the usual losses) thats nearly 200g... or two whole pots per brew...

Seems a bit much?? Posts on here seem to suggest a couple of teaspoons (one in mash tun one in boiler); I don't know how much a teaspoon of it weighs but surely there are many more than one tsp per pot. Am i missing something about its use here? <certainly wouldn't be the first time! >

Many thanks,
Kev.

Ah, that makes sense - my own stupidity as always, couldn't make out much of the lable and assumed it was for beer. Thanks Aleman!

I put mine in the mash and sparge water, is there no point adding to the sparge? Should I just throw it in the boiler?

In theory you should put your water treatment into the liquor for the mash and sparge. Personally I think that the mash bed could well retain some of the addition to the sparge liquor so prefer to add it to the boiler as I'm running off the wort.

The water treatment in the mash liquor has do its job during the mash, and apart from aiding wort viscosity (and therefore run off) there is no point in adding more during the sparge, where it may be there for such a short period of time, it would have little or no effect.
