Brewday 15-10-07 Old Slug

As promised, I had a day off today and thought I'd do the Old Slug Porter recipe in BYO November. I've converted this from the original 19L to 24L.

Mash 60mins
Boil 60mins

OG 1043

4.2kg Marris Otter
37g Black Malt
30g Crystal
11g East Kent Goldings 60min
11g Fuggles 60min
11g East Kent Goldings 20min
11g Fuggles 20min

1 Whirfloc Tablet
Nottingham Yeast

All in all a good brewday and finished really quickly due to the short time mash and boil which pleased the wife for a change :D

Nice one!

I'm impressed with the amount of trub left behind. Do you have a very vigourous boil and what temperature do you chill to before transferring to FV?

Cheers Wez, no I don't have a vigourous boil it's more of a steady boil as the little boiler only has one element. As for chilling, I generally chill down to about 30c and transfer, by the time the wort has transferred it's down to pitching temp :D

looks like a nice brew day, i just though the recipe called for more black and crystal malt ?

It's supposed to be a brown porter so I guess that's why there's so little dark malts in the original recipe. It's definately brown in the fermenter. If I like this brew I'll have a play with the recipe at a future date :D

Yeah how is it? I was thinking about giving this recipe a go after a I had a couple of Old Slugs from cask a little while back. Its a nice beer!

It's brown and smooth just like a traditional English session porter should be, well worth brewing. I'll post a piccy soon :D

Just had this at my local - awesome brew!!! How was yours? Looks a little lighter in colour than the one I had - it was basically the colour of Guiness... might look at this brew myself :)

From what I remember my brew was exactly the some colour as the original as in a "Brown English Session Porter". They may have changed the recipe over time to make it darker to attract the Guinness drinkers. By the way it was a cracker :D
